He was elected councilor in Nagpur Municipal Corporation in 1992 and held this responsibility for two consecutive terms.
Fadnavis also holds the record of being the second youngest mayor in India. He has been the youngest mayor of Nagpur. Apart from this, Devendra Fadnavis was also the Mayor of Nagpur twice. After that, in 1999, he entered the Maharashtra Assembly as an MLA, which is still continuing.
Devendra Fadnavis became the BJP candidate from Nagpur West seat in the 1999 Maharashtra Assembly elections. In this election, he defeated Ashok Dhawad of Congress by 9087 votes and became MLA for the first time. In the next election also he became BJP candidate from Nagpur West seat. This time he defeated Congress candidate Arvindbabu Deshmukh. This time the victory margin of Fadnavis increased to 17,610 votes.

In front of him, Vikas Pandurang Thackeray from Congress tried his best. Bharip Mahajan Bahu Sangh also fielded Lokhande Raju Jyotiram. Devend Fadnavis got a total of 89,258 votes in this election. Whereas Vikas Pandurang Thackeray of Congress could get only 61,483 votes. Raju of Bharip Mahajan Bahu Sangh had to be satisfied with 10,533 votes.

After 2009, Devendra Fadnavis became the BJP candidate from the same seat in Nagpur South-West Assembly seat in 2014 also. In this election he defeated Congress candidate Prafulla Vinod Gudadhe (Patil). Fadnavis became MLA for the fourth consecutive time and once again the victory margin increased to 58,942 votes. In this election, BJP got 122 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly while its ally Shiv Sena got 63 seats. After this victory, Devendra Fadnavis became the 18th Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
