The Alauli assembly seat, once a Congress stronghold, has seen a dramatic shift in power over the years. From Congress dominance to the rise of Ram Vilas Paswan and later his brother Pashupati Kumar Paras, the journey of this seat tells a unique story. Let’s explore how a train journey changed political history and how this seat’s equation has evolved.

Alauli Assembly Seat: From Congress to Paswan Legacy

1962: Birth of Alauli Seat

The Alauli assembly seat came into existence in 1962. Congress won the first election here with Mishri Sada defeating Dhanpat Das of the Swatantra Party by a big margin of 14,443 votes.

1967: Congress Wins Again

Mishri Sada repeated his success in 1967, winning against independent candidate S. Das by 10,378 votes. This made Congress the early powerhouse in Alauli.

1969: A Turning Point — The Rise of Ram Vilas Paswan

After political instability in Bihar post-1967, mid-term elections were held in 1969. This was the year a young man from Shaharbanni village entered politics—Ram Vilas Paswan. He left his newly-earned job as a DSP to contest elections. It is said that he got the ticket from the Samyukta Socialist Party because there was no strong challenger to Congress's Mishri Sada.

Paswan campaigned on a bicycle across Alauli and made a strong impression. He won the seat with 45.29% of the votes, marking the beginning of a powerful political career.

1972: Ram Vilas Paswan Faces Defeat

Paswan lost the next election in 1972. Congress's Mishri Sada made a comeback, defeating Paswan by 6,807 votes. It was a setback, but only temporary.

1977: Pashupati Kumar Paras Enters the Scene

After the Emergency, in the 1977 elections, Ram Vilas Paswan moved to national politics and became an MP from Hajipur. His brother, Pashupati Kumar Paras, took over the Alauli seat. Contesting from the Janata Party, Paras defeated Congress veteran Mishri Sada by 3,607 votes.

1980: Congress Strikes Back

Paras lost in 1980 when Mishri Sada reclaimed the seat once again, this time representing Congress (I). He defeated Paras by 9,440 votes—his fourth win from Alauli.

1985 to 2005: Paras's Winning Streak

From 1985 to October 2005, Pashupati Kumar Paras dominated the Alauli assembly seat, winning six consecutive elections. He changed parties several times—Lok Dal, Janata Dal, JD(U), and LJP—but kept winning:

  • 1985: Defeated Congress’s Wageshwar Paswan by 21,699 votes.

  • 1990: Beat Arun Kumar Paswan of Congress by 28,191 votes.

  • 1995: Defeated Mishri Sada by 17,357 votes.

  • 2000: Won against RJD’s Ram Briksh Sada by 4,686 votes.

  • Feb 2005: Defeated RJD’s Meera Devi by 9,711 votes.

  • Oct 2005: Beat RJD’s Ram Briksh Sada again by 8,577 votes.

2010 & 2015: The Fall of Paras

The political tide turned in 2010 when Paras lost the Alauli assembly seat to JDU's Ramchandra Sada by 17,523 votes. Again in 2015, Paras was defeated—this time by RJD’s Chandan Kumar, who won by a massive 24,470 votes.

2020: RJD’s Ramvriksh Sada Wins

In the 2020 elections, Ramvriksh Sada of RJD won the Alauli assembly seat, defeating JDU's Sadhna Devi by 2,773 votes. Interestingly, Ramchandra Sada, who had earlier won in 2010, contested on an LJP ticket but came third.

Current Political Equation in Alauli

The Alauli assembly seat has seen many shifts over the decades—from Congress to the Paswan brothers, and now to RJD. As Bihar heads into elections again later this year, all eyes will be on Alauli to see if RJD can retain its hold or if another twist in the tale awaits.

From a Congress stronghold to the political battleground of the Paswan family, the Alauli assembly seat has a rich and eventful history. With new faces and changing alliances, this seat continues to play a key role in Bihar’s political landscape. Stay tuned as the seat equation unfolds in the upcoming elections.
